The Energy Foundation was launched in 1991 by three leading foundations who decided it was time for philanthropy to help the world meet its energy challenges. In 1999, with support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Energy Foundation established the China Sustainable Energy Program now called Energy Foundation China. So far they have made over 400 grants under the China program. Grant sizes range up to $300,000. Their annual funding volume for China amounts to $30 million. They support work in the sectors of (1) clean power; (2) environmental management; (3) industry, low-carbon development; (4) sustainable cities and transportation; and (5) strategic communications.
2) Thematic Interest
- Sustainable cities
- Environmental management
3) Focus Countries
Their funding focus is on China.
4) Application Procedure
Applications can be sent anytime throughout the year via email. There is a template on their website that applicants can use but it is not a must. It takes approximately four to six weeks to review proposals and inquiries and to contact the applicant with an initial response. If you is a first-time grantseeker or unsure whether the proposal fits into the Foundation’s guidelines, we strongly advise you to send a letter of inquiry via email (see contact details below).
