Description
1) Objective
The Adaptation Fund finances projects and programmes that help vulnerable communities in developing countries adapt to climate change. Initiatives are based on country needs, views and priorities. Since 2010, the Adaptation Fund has committed over 1.2 billion for climate change adaptation and resilience projects and programmes, including 176 concrete, localized projects in the most vulnerable communities of developing countries around the world with over 45 million total beneficiaries. It also pioneered Direct Access and Enhanced Direct Access, empowering countries to access funding and develop local projects directly through accredited national implementing entities.
The accreditation process of the Adaptation Fund aims to ensure that the entity follows fiduciary and safeguard standards while accessing financial resources of the Adaptation Fund. During the Adaptation Fund’s accreditation process, each type of entity will undergo an assessment for accreditation to make sure the entity adheres to sound accreditation standards and implements effective social and environmental safeguards to identify any project risks in advance, prevent any harm and improve the effectiveness and sustainability of results.
2) Eligibility
To apply for project and programme funding, countries must submit proposals through an accredited institution. An entity that meets the accreditation standards identified and nominated as an implementing entity by a Designated Authority: (1) A National Implementing entity (NIE) must be nominated by their respective governments prior to submitting an application for accreditation; (2) A Regional Implementing Entity (RIE) must receive a letter of support from at least 2 of the countries in which they operate (RIEs typically consist of member countries from a certain region); and (3) Multilateral Implementing Entities (MIE) are invited by the Board to apply for accreditation and do not require an endorsement letter to submit an application.
3) Location
Actions can take place in developing countries worldwide.
4) Budget
Total funding volume and grant sizes are not specified.
5) Application
Applications can be submitted on a rolling basis through its dedicated website, Accreditation Workflow.
