Description

1) Objective

The Radio 4 Appeal is a weekly 3-minute programme highlighting the work of a charity and appealing for donations to support its activities. The appeal aims to provide an opportunity for raising money and awareness to a variety of charities. There are four main types of Charity Appeals which the BBC broadcasts:

  • Regular network broadcast appeals for individual UK-based charities. These are the weekly BBC Radio 4 appeals and the monthly Lifeline appeals on BBC One.
  • Specific fundraising initiatives such as BBC Children in Need Appeal Night, Comic Relief and the annual St Martin-in-the-Fields Christmas Appeal.
  • Appeals on behalf of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which is composed of UK charities involved in overseas relief work, when a humanitarian crisis occurs.
  • Appeals for charities working in Northern Ireland and the English regions.

2) Eligibility

A charity can only have an appeal broadcast on the BBC once every three years. UK charities registered with the Charity Commission whose work has an impact at UK or international level are eligible. You must provide two sets of audited or independently examined accounts and have up to date management accounts within a 3-month period. Charities members of the Disasters Emergency Committee are ineligible.

3) Location

They are supporting projects worldwide.

4) Budget

The average grant is from £5,000 to £20,000.

5) Application

Applications can be sent out all year round. They have specific cut off dates every 2-3 months that can be found on their website.
