Description
1) Objective
The U.S. Embassy Nairobi, through its Public Diplomacy Section, is launching a funding initiative titled “Bolstering East Africa’s Investigative Journalism Ecosystem” aimed at enhancing the capacity and practice of investigative journalism in the region. The objective is to establish Nairobi as a central hub for public interest journalism by equipping journalists, civil society members, and others with advanced investigative techniques.
This program emphasizes training in identifying inauthentic behavior and utilizing artificial intelligence in journalism. Key components include curriculum development, virtual exchanges, training sessions, and mentoring programs. Additionally, the initiative seeks to establish an independent Center for Investigative Reporting in Kenya, ensuring long-term sustainability through institutional strategies.
2) Eligibility
Eligible applicants include not-for-profit organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. tax code, foreign-based NGOs, public and private educational institutions, as well as public international organizations and governmental institutions.
3) Location
Actions must take place in Kenya.
4) Budget
The total estimated program funding is $986,500. Applicants can apply for awards up to this amount, with no requirement for cost sharing or matching funds.
