Description
1) Objective
The “Community of Action Grant” under Hivos’ Connect, Defend, Act! project aims to support civil society actors in Malawi to defend and expand civic space. With the increasing repression of civil society globally, Hivos seeks to strengthen collaboration, solidarity, and trust-building among diverse civil society actors. By providing a platform for exchange and joint action, the grant aims to address barriers such as resource shortages, legal threats, digital security risks, and limited access to sustainable funding. The selected partner will facilitate coalition-building among human rights defenders, marginalized communities, youth, women, and independent media, particularly those advocating for gender equality, human rights, and democratic values. A core focus of the project is ensuring that these actors have access to safe, inclusive, and rights-holder-led spaces for strategic action, knowledge production, and digital security capacity strengthening.
Through this initiative, the project envisions a collaborative, local ownership approach to amplify civil society’s influence in shaping a more open and resilient civic environment. The grant also emphasizes the importance of learning, reflection, and adapting to challenges, fostering flexible responses to changing political and societal dynamics. By promoting bridging connections across diverse backgrounds, the initiative aims to strengthen civil society’s ability to counteract shrinking civic spaces effectively.
