Description
1) Objective
UNICEF Ecuador is seeking new partners to work on emergency preparedness and response. This call of expression of interest is to establish a potential partnership roster, sign contingency humanitarian development programmes to relief 751,000 people in need that UNICEF will support. The main locations that UNICEF will prioritize are: Esmeraldas, ManabĂ, Pichincha, SucumbĂos, Guayas. The main potential sectoral impacts identified by UNICEF are listed below:
1. Health and nutrition: In the short term, damage to health infrastructure and equipment, shortages of supplies and medicines, difficulties in accessing the population and mobilizing health teams, increase in vector-borne diseases (such as dengue, malaria, zika, chikungunya), waterborne diseases, outbreaks of leptospirosis, snakebites, diarrheal and skin diseases. In the medium term, increased malnutrition, infant mortality and infectious diseases.
2. Education and child development: Damage to educational infrastructure and physical assets, disruption of educational institutions and child development centers (accessibility, electricity, water and sanitation), discontinuity of education and child development services, school dropout due to school closures or displacement of children and adolescents, difficulties in providing complementary educational services (school feeding, emotional support, protection), learning losses and setbacks in holistic child development.
3. WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene): Interruption or limitation of access to drinking water, contamination of water sources, damage to water and sanitation infrastructures such as reservoirs, wells, treatment plants, sewage systems, etc. Increased costs of cleaning and disposal of sludge, contamination of water sources, interruption of the provision of water services, sanitation and waste management. Difficulties in promoting hygiene practices due to lack of access to supplies, including hygiene materials and supplies for the prevention of vector-borne diseases.
4. Child protection: Displacement of families to shelters with limited capacity, family separations, increased violence against children and adolescents, increased risk of trafficking and recruitment by organized crime gangs. Increase in the number of children living on the streets; increase in orphans, with a medium-term increase in child labour. Deepening gender inequalities.
