Description

1) Objective

The FREE Grow initiative aims to empower women and girls in East Africa’s floriculture, tea, and coffee communities. It seeks to address the unique impacts of COVID-19 on these populations by fostering recovery and long-term resilience. The program provides direct grants to non-profit organizations, groups, associations, collectives, and networks that focus on the rights and wellbeing of women and girls.

Key areas of support include improving physical, mental, and reproductive health, promoting entrepreneurship, advocating for fair labor practices, building resilience to climate change, enhancing financial inclusion, and securing land rights. By investing in these areas, FREE Grow aims to uplift economically engaged women in agricultural sectors, particularly those from underrepresented and vulnerable groups, ensuring their safety, dignity, and economic security.

2) Eligibility

Eligible applicants must be formally registered non-profit organizations, groups, associations, collectives, or networks in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, or Tanzania. They should have a minimum of three staff members, demonstrate experience in gender equality within floriculture, tea, or coffee sectors, and align with the mission of FREE Grow. Additionally, at least 60% of their leadership positions must be held by women, except for applicants from Ethiopia and Rwanda, who are encouraged to apply regardless. The organization’s annual income for 2023 must be between GBP 15,000 and GBP 200,000.

3) Location

Actions must take place in Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania.

4) Budget

FREE Grow offers two grant sizes: (1) Seed Grants: Up to £20,000 for organizations with a minimum annual income of GBP 15,000; and (2) Leaf Grants: Between £20,000 and £35,000 for organizations with a minimum annual income of GBP 40,000.

5) Application

The application process is divided into two phases: (1) Phase 1: Opens on 10 July 2024 and closes on 26 July 2024. Applicants will answer eligibility questions and submit a brief description of their proposal; and (2) Phase 2: Longlisted candidates will be invited to submit a full application in August 2024. Full applications will be scored by regional peer panels and an advisory committee. Successful applicants will be contacted in October 2024.
