Description
1) Objective
Created in 1979, the Migros Support Fund (Migros-Unterstützungsfonds) support social and ecological projects in Switzerland and in developing countries across the globe. The Fund’s thematic priority areas are projects for marginalised population groups (incl. women and children), educational initiatives and sports events as a tool for integration. All projects must have a clear exit/sustainability strategy and provide ‘help for self-help’. As of 2022, also grants seed funding for small projects aimed at promoting economically underdeveloped areas of Switzerland. Regional non-profit organisations (associations, foundations, etc.) based in Switzerland can apply for the funding.
The focus is on activities in the following areas:
- gender
- inter-generational relationships
- health (especially the promotion of mental and social health)
- promoting creativity
- early-years education
- life and family models
- migration/integration
- new and open learning cultures
- neighbourhood development
- volunteering and civil society
2) Eligibility
Eligible to receive grant funding are Swiss non-profit organisations with a good track record of project implementation. The organisation must have an annual turnover of at least 300,000 francs.
3) Location
The Fund has no defined focus countries and provides funding for projects in Switzerland as well as Africa (e.g. Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, Egypt, Togo, Ghana and Uganda), Asia (e.g. Afghanistan, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Lebanon), Latin America (e.g. Colombia, El Salvador, Cuba, Nicaragua), and Eastern Europe (e.g. Moldova).
4) Budget
The Fund has an annual funding volume of around CHF 1,000,000 (approximately $1,000,000) and around 20 projects receive grant funding every year (average grant sizes per project range between CHF 40,000 and CHF 100,000).
5) Application
Applications must be completed via the Fund’s online portal and may be submitted to the Fund throughout the year. Proposals are usually submitted in German.
