USAID Development Innovation Ventures (DIV) is an open innovation fund that sources, tests, and accelerates breakthrough ideas that address global development challenges around the world. DIV seeks to bring in new ideas for solving problems facing millions around the world – delivering more impact, for less money, with greater potential for sustainable scale. Inspired by the venture capital experience, DIV uses a tiered, evidence-based funding model to test ideas, gather evidence of what works, find failures quickly and cheaply, without long-term commitments, and continue to support only proven solutions.
Funding ranges across all sectors: global health 36%, economic growth and trade 30%, energy 30%, agriculture and food security 26%, water/sanitation and hygiene 17%, education and training 12%, democracy and governance 7%, disaster relief and humanitarian assistance 3% and environment 2%.
DIV accepts applications from U.S. and non US organisations, individuals, non-profit and for profit entities, provided their work is in a country where USAID provides funds to development efforts.
The funding is open to countries in Asia, Middle East, Africa, North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, where USAID provides funds to development efforts.
Grants range from $25,000 to $5,000,000: (1) Stage 1: Proof of Concept/Initial Testing $25,000-$200,000 up to 3 years); (2) Stage 2: Testing and Positioning for Scale $200,000-$1,500,000 up to 3 years; and (3) Stage 3: Transitioning Proven Solutions to Scale $1,500,000-5,000,000 up to 5 years). Evidence Grants for up to $1,500,000 are also available.
