Description
1) Objective
Hivos Food & Lifestyle Fund is aimed at food companies in Southern Africa. They invest to to make a financial return and to create a sustainable food system from farm-to-fork, to allow people in Southern Africa to have a healthy, diversified diet with local foods that are produced in ways that increase biodiversity and restore soils. Hivos Food & Lifestyle Fund invests according to the following investment criteria: (1) stimulating the Food & Food Lifestyle industries; (2) impact on food & health, soil degradation and food loss; (3) contributing to the ecosystem by investing in the ‘missing middle’. They are looking to expand their portfolio and make equity investments and convertible loans.
They look for the following sectors:
- Reinventing local traditional food products
- Urban farming
- Biopesticides and organic fertilizers
- Farming related geodata
- Innovative solutions for food handling & transport
- Track & trace solutions within the food chain
- Food waste reduction
- Retail; organic food & beverages
2) Eligibility
Companies are eligible to apply. The Hivos Food & Lifestyle Fund invests in food companies from farm-to-fork, and aims to create local markets for healthy food products that are sustainably produced. They focus on local production, smart distribution, and responsible consumption.
3) Location
The geographic focus of the Hivos Food & Lifestyle Fund is Southern Africa, especially South Africa, Zambia and Malawi.
4) Budget
They aim to invest between €50,000 and €500,000 per deal, but typically invest within the lower range in first-time deals. They invest in equity or convertible loan.
5) Application
The impact investment funds are open to interested accredited investors that align with the mission and vision of the funds. The online application form can be filled in on their website all year round.
