Description

1) Objective

EMBO is an organisation of more than 1800 leading researchers that promotes excellence in the life sciences in Europe and beyond. The major goals of the organisation are to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and help build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work.

EMBO Installation Grants support early-career scientists establishing independent laboratories in one of five participating EMBC Member States that fund their respective grantees. The Installation Grants were launched in 2006. Installation Grantees are selected annually on the basis of high-quality research, and, together with the EMBO Young Investigators, form a prestigious network of Europe’s up-and-coming life scientists. To date, 78 scientists have been selected as Installation Grantees. Information about the projects that have been funded each year and their recipients is available in the EMBO Installation Grantee database.

2) Eligibility

Candidates applying for an Installation Grant must: (1) Be negotiating a full-time group leader position at an institute/university in the Czech Republic, Poland, Portugal, Lithuania, Turkey and Montenegro by the date of application; (2) OR have established a laboratory in one of these countries in the last two years; (3) Have spent at least two consecutive years outside the country in which they are planning to establish their laboratory in the four years prior to application; (4) Have received their PhD less than 9 years prior to application.

3) Location

At present, Installation Grant applications are accepted by Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal and Türkiye.

4) Budget

EMBO Installation Grantees receive an annual grant of €50,000 for three to five years. Annual payments are provided by the respective funding agency in each of the participating country. They can also apply for additional small grants of up to 10,000 euros per year (from EMBO).

5) Application

The deadline for pre-applications is 15 April annually. After the interview, the EMBO Young Investigator Committee ranks all applicants and makes a binding recommendation to the Strategic Development Installation Grants (SDIG) Board.
