1) Objective

The U.S. Embassy in Tirana, Albania, has launched the Media Literacy Program to enhance media literacy among Albanian citizens, with a particular focus on students. This initiative aims to transform media consumption into an active and critical process, enabling individuals to better navigate the complexities of misinformation, misrepresentation, and manipulation prevalent in today’s media landscape. Over the past three years, the Embassy has supported projects that foster critical engagement with media among university students and the broader Albanian public, aiming to cultivate a more informed and discerning citizenry.

The program seeks to embed media literacy education within Albanian universities, specifically targeting teacher education programs to create a sustainable impact on future educators and, consequently, their students. By improving analytical and creative skills in analyzing and creating media content, the initiative strives to strengthen resilience against disinformation, fake news, conspiracy theories, and propaganda. Through training, competitions, and media literacy events, the program aims to increase the capacities of pedagogical staff and integrate media literacy into pre-university and university education, thereby bridging the gap between educational levels and promoting a culture of critical media consumption.

Eligible applicants for the Media Literacy Program include not-for-profit organizations, such as civil society, non-governmental organizations, and think tanks with experience and expertise in media literacy programs.
