Description
1) Objective
The Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund was established by Auckland Zoo staff in 2000 in order to support conservation efforts in the wild, both in New Zealand and overseas. The Fund aims to make conservation a core issue of concern at the zoo and is driven by passion for conservation, the ability to make a difference to wildlife and the environment, and to inspire others to do the same. Eligible projects must: (1) have a clear conservation value; and (2) be based in New Zealand or in a developing country (although applicants can be based anywhere in the world).
Pure research (i.e. research projects must demonstrate applied benefit to conservation and/or target an identified conservation need) or conferences, seminars, workshops or meetings are not eligible. Project applications will score more highly during the selection process if they: (1) are likely to have a direct conservation impact; (2) are collaborative and involve a local conservation organisation; and (3) are logistically feasible, and fiscally and scientifically sound.
2) Eligibility
Non-Governmental Organisations are eligible to apply.
3) Location
Funding is provided to projects implemented across the globe. Some past funding has gone into projects in Africa, Pacific Islands, South America, Southeast Asia, and South Asia (Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, and Pakistan).
4) Budget
Small grants will be awarded up to a maximum of NZD$5,000. However, in most cases, successful grants will be in the region of NZD$1,000 – $3,000. The amount applied for through the programme should represent a minimum of 25% of the project’s overall budget.
5) Application
They accept applications to the Small Grants Programme throughout the year, but only two rounds of grants are made. The application form can be downloaded from their website and must be emailed to conservationgrants(a)aucklandzoo.co.nz.
