Description

1) Objective

The U.S. Consulate General in Erbil of the U.S. Department of State has announced an open competition for grants aimed at building capacity among visual artists and IT students/recent graduates in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region (IKR) and Kirkuk governorate. The objective is to diversify the economy, currently heavily dependent on petroleum exports, by helping various demographics launch online businesses. The program will offer two separate tracks: one for IT students or recent graduates from seven specified universities, focusing on app development and monetization; and another for visual artists with an existing social media following of at least 5,000, focusing on online sales platform utilization.

Outcomes for IT participants should include one monetized app per participant, while visual artists should successfully use an online platform to monetize their work. Programs should also aim to strengthen cultural ties between the United States and the IKR, incorporating American cultural elements, connections with American experts, or U.S.-developed materials to promote understanding of U.S. policy and perspectives.

2) Eligibility

Eligible applicants include nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status with the IRS (excluding higher education institutions), nonprofits without 501(c)(3) status with the IRS (excluding higher education institutions), public and state-controlled institutions of higher education, and private institutions of higher education.

3) Location

Actions must take place in Iraq.

4) Budget

The estimated total program funding is $100,000, with an award ceiling of $100,000 and an award floor of $75,000. The program expects to make 10 awards.
