Description

1) Objective

The Story Grants program aims to strengthen environmental coverage in the Amazon by funding journalists to produce stories that expose the threats to biodiversity due to transnational conservation crimes and the challenges faced by Indigenous peoples and local communities in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. The program is part of the “Together for Conservation” project, striving to bolster the capacity of civil society and media to prevent environmental crimes and foster biodiversity conservation through enhanced transparency and accountability.

2) Eligibility

Journalists based in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, or Peru, especially those residing in the Amazon region, are eligible to apply. A special interest is directed toward Indigenous journalists from the area. Applications can be individual or group-based, provided they specify the role of each member. Applications must be submitted in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.

3) Countries

The focus is on journalists from Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, with a preference for those residing in the Amazon regions of these countries.

4) Budget

The grants range from $1,500 to $2,500, with the expectation that more substantial grants will involve cross-country collaboration or partnerships. The grant aims to cover field reporting, travel, accommodation, insurance, research, production costs, and translation if necessary.

5) Application

The deadline for applications is December 1, 2023. Successful applicants will be awarded grants in February 2024 and are expected to publish their stories by August 2024 at the latest. Applicants must consider the Covid-19 safety protocols and attend an online workshop on digital and physical security. Stories can be published in English, Spanish, and Portuguese and must acknowledge the support from Internews’ Earth Journalism Network.
