Description
1) Objective
The U.S. Embassy Kigali and the U.S. Department of State have announced an open competition for grants aimed at promoting financially sustainable investigative journalism in Rwanda. The initiative, part of the Africa Regional Democracy Fund program, seeks to enhance government accountability, responsible journalism, and freedom of expression in Rwanda’s digital space.
The program supports public interest journalism to foster a more transparent and accountable governance structure. By bolstering investigative journalism, the program aims to provide Rwandan citizens with reliable information, thereby strengthening democratic processes and human rights protections.
2) Eligibility
Eligible applicants for this grant include Rwandan local registered community-based organizations, associations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with at least two years of experience in the fields of Democracy, Governance, and Human Rights. Organizations with a history of poor performance on previous U.S. government grants are ineligible for this funding.
3) Location
Actions must take place in Rwanda.
4) Budget
The total program funding for this grant opportunity is not explicitly stated. However, individual awards will be made at a fixed amount of $300,000.
5) Application
The original and current closing date for applications is August 30, 2024. Interested applicants should submit their applications electronically. For any difficulties accessing the full announcement or for additional information, applicants can contact Sona Karia at KigaliASGP@state.gov.
