Description

1) Objective

The European AI & Society Fund’s Fellowship Programme on AI & Market Power seeks to support investigative research into the dynamics of market concentration within the global AI ecosystem. With a total funding of $500,000, the programme aims to enhance understanding of how large-scale AI systems influence market dynamics, concentrating capital and power among a few corporate entities. Fellows will investigate topics such as AI business models, impacts on third-party developers, and avenues for challenging market power, aiming to inform policy makers, civil society, and businesses on shaping AI for societal benefit.

Fellows will carry out investigative research and critical analysis on one or more of the following topics:

  • The nature of the partnerships between firms developing large-scale AI and infrastructure actors.
  • The business models of large-scale AI systems providers.
  • The impacts of concentration and abuse of market power by incumbent firms on third-party application developers and business deployers.
  • The avenues for challenging market power.

2) Eligibility

The programme welcomes applications from individual investigators or interdisciplinary teams of up to 3 members. Applicants should demonstrate strong investigative skills, including OSINT, and expertise in market and technical research. Both independent researchers and those affiliated with institutions are eligible to apply.

3) Location

Actions can take place worldwide.

4) Budget

The total budget for the fellowship programme is $500,000, with grants of up to $70,000 available per project. Larger amounts may be considered in exceptional cases.

5) Application

Interested applicants should submit their application forms and CVs to fellowships@europeanaifund.org by 8 July 2024, 23:59 CET. Applications will undergo review, and successful candidates will be notified by 16 September 2024. Fellows are expected to commence their research by 7 December 2024.
