Description
1) Objective
This initiative is part of the Engaged Democracy Initiative (EDI), which supports journalists in uncovering stories of regional significance. Selected journalists will investigate issues within one of the following thematic areas: environment, public space, civic rights/rights of activists, decent work, media. The main output should be a long-read investigative piece (digital or print). Where editorially appropriate, this may take the form of a series of shorter connected articles rather than a single piece. Investigations may also be accompanied by multimedia outputs such as photo essays, data visualisations, audio, or video.
The European Fund for the Balkans works to strengthen democracy and accelerate European integration across the Western Balkans by investing in people, ideas, and independent voices. A free and vibrant press is central to that mission. Accountability journalism, the kind that follows the money, exposes systemic failures, and gives citizens the evidence they need to demand change, is one of the most powerful tools available in societies where democratic institutions remain fragile and public trust is hard-won. This grant exists precisely to enable that work. We invite journalists who are committed to rigorous, regionally significant investigation to join us in making it happen.
2) Eligibility
Eligible are journalists from or reporting on the Western Balkans 6 countries: Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia.
3) Location
Actions must take place in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia.
4) Budget
The budget range for this proposal should be not more than €2,000.
5) Application
Fill in the online application form before the deadline: August 15, 2026.
