1) Objective
The Dudley T. Dougherty Foundation, established in 2002, is a private U.S.-based 501(c)(3) foundation that supports nonprofit organizations globally. While it primarily funds U.S.-based entities, it has made exceptions for international initiatives. The foundation’s mission is to support efforts that promote social justice, child welfare, and access to education, among other areas.
The foundation’s grantmaking focuses on the following sectors:
- Social Justice: Supporting initiatives that advocate for equality and human rights.
- Child Welfare: Funding programs aimed at improving the well-being of children.
- Education: Supporting access to quality education and educational resources.
- Healthcare: Funding initiatives that provide healthcare services and promote health equity.
- Environment: Supporting projects focused on environmental conservation and sustainability.
- Peace and Social Justice: Funding efforts that promote peace and address social injustices.
2) Eligibility
To be eligible for a grant from the Dudley T. Dougherty Foundation, your organization must be a US-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and be listed in the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search. They do not make grants to individuals, for-profit organizations, or organizations that are not 501(c)(3) non-profits.
3) Location
Actions can take place worldwide. In the past they have funded projects in Nepal, South Africa, Brazil, Guatemala, Uganda, Kenya, Haiti, or India.
4) Budget
The foundation awards on average around 30 grants totalling $120,000, with a median grant size of $5,000. Individual grants have ranged from $100 to $14,000, depending on the project’s scope and needs.
5) Application
The deadline for submissions is October 31st, 2025. The Dudley T. Dougherty Foundation uses a 3-step online grant proposal to execute the submission process. You may preview all 3 pages without triggering a submission, but once you begin, please complete the grant proposal in one sitting. Grant decisions are typically made in December.
