Description

1) About

Kopernik is an online marketplace to enable communities in developing countries to have access to simple but innovative technologies. The online marketplace operates in the following way: (1) Kopernik selects appropriate technology products to profile on its website; (2) local organisations send proposals to Kopernik to request these products and to become distribution partners; (3) for approved projects, Kopernik orders the products; (4) the products are shipped to the local partners; and (5) people buy the technology at a locally affordable price through the local partners. The end users of the technologies are households, schools, communities, and other grass-roots initiatives. Kopernik offers technology grants (including several related to agriculture, energy and environment, and water and sanitation).

2) Thematic Interest

  • Online marketplace
  • Technology grants
  • Fundraising through crowdfunding

3) Focus Countries

Kopernik has no defined focus countries and operates (online) across the globe.

4) Application procedure

Local partners request from a list of available technology products. Kopernik raises funds and manages the distribution of the products to the selected partners. Local organisations can learn about available technologies in Kopernik’s online technology catalogue.  They can learn about lodging a proposal for the most locally appropriate products by contacting Kopernik. After conducting successful due diligence on the partner organisation and the project proposal, Kopernik publishes the project on its website to raise funds through crowdfunding.
