Description

1) Objective

EWI grew out of the Ecumenical Women’s Solidarity Fund (EWSF), a programme established by the World Council of Churches (WCC) in 1992 in response to the publication of the report “The Rape of Women in War in ex-Yugoslavia” by the WCC Women’s Desk. The Geneva-based programme provided grants to women-led projects which supported women victims of war in the region and was supported by donations from WCC member churches and ecumenical development agencies. Following the programme’s positive evaluation in 2007, recommendations from its grantees indicated the need for an indigenous women’s fund in the region whose key focus would shift from women as victims of war to initiators of social change.

Thematic areas of this call are:

  • peace and reconciliation
  • ecumenical and inter-religious cooperation
  • women’s human rights

EWI supports activities designed especially for women and girls (over 15 years of age), however men and boys of the same age may also be included.

2) Eligibility

Grassroots civil society organisations in which women have decision-making roles and are responsible for the project’s implementation, and women theologians working in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia or Serbia. Applications from current EWI project grantees who are required to conclude all their contractual obligations by the end of November, will be considered. Women theologians/students of theology can submit their project proposals exclusively through institutions, religious/monastic communities or civil society organisations within which they operate. Locally owned community organisations, whose members share a common vision to address localised problems using self-organisation, collective action and community mobilisation to effect change at local, national and international level.

3) Location

Actions must take place in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia or Serbia.

Total available funding is €210,000. Grants may range from €4,000-€10,000.
