Description
1) Objective
Founded in 1994, the African Bird Club (ABC) is a non-profit organisation that supports ornithological conservation projects in Africa. The aims of the Club are to provide a worldwide focus for African ornithology, raise money to support conservation projects in Africa through the Conservation Fund, encourage an interest in the conservation of the birds of the region, liaise with and promote the work of existing regional societies, publish a twice-yearly colour bulletin, encourage observers to visit lesser known areas of the region, and search for and study globally threatened and near-threatened species. The Club’s Conservation Program supports small to medium sized conservation projects in Africa.
Expedition Awards of up to £5,000 each may be made for larger, more ambitious projects outside the applicant’s home country. Such an award is often only one component of the funding for the expedition, which must take place within continental Africa or related islands and be conservation-based with a strong bird component.
2) Eligibility
Applications are invited from expeditions meeting the following criteria: (1) the expedition must take place within continental Africa or adjacent islands (Atlantic islands on or east of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and Indian Ocean islands west of 80° E); (2) the expedition must be conservation based with a strong bird component; (3) the expedition must be associated with a bona fide academic institution, conservation NGO or recognised natural history or bird club; (4) objectives should preferably be derived from any of the publications identifying international conservation priorities eg. IUCN red data books, IBA Directories, the Birds to Watch series, Endemic Bird Areas of the world etc.
3) Location
The Club’s geographic focus is Africa. This includes Continental Africa, Madagascar, Mascarene Islands and Socotra, as well as Tristan da Cunha group, Azores and Canaries.
4) Budget
The award size is up to GBP5,000.
5) Application
The application template can be downloaded from the Club’s website. There are three funding cycles every year and deadlines for receipts of applications is the end of October (for review in February), the end of February (for review in June) and the end of June (for review in October). Completed applications should be sent by email (see contact details below). An applicant may only submit a single proposal in each funding round.
