Description
1) Objective
The Anhar: Culture and Climate Platform, initiated by Art Jameel and the British Council, aims to foster ambitious art projects that address the climate emergency in the Arab world. It builds on a Culture and Climate Summit to enhance support for practitioners in the region. The platform’s objectives include backing cultural projects that raise climate crisis awareness, retrofitting cultural spaces for energy efficiency, and encouraging community-driven artistic production. It seeks to facilitate peer exchange, foster international collaborations, and strengthen a network of cultural practitioners dedicated to climate action.
2) Eligibility
Eligible applicants include individual artists, collectives, and cultural organizations based in specified MENA region countries. A focus on supporting marginalized groups, such as Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and other minorities, is emphasized.
3) Location
The eligible countries are Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Occupied Palestinian Territories, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
4) Budget
There are three tiers of awards. Tier 1 offers £1,000 to £5,000 for individual artists and collectives. Tier 2 grants £5,000 to £10,000 for cultural organizations implementing a decarbonization strategy. Tier 3 provides £25,000 to £50,000 for collaborations between UK and MENA entities for large-scale projects.
5) Application
Applications are accepted from October 4, 2023, to January 15, 2024, via an online form available on the Art Jameel website. Applicants can submit proposals in English or Arabic (except for Tier 3, English only). Successful applicants will be contacted directly, with public announcements of grantees made in March 2024. Projects should be completed by December 15, 2024. Applicants are advised to read the eligibility criteria and FAQs before submitting their application.
