Description
1) Objective
The Energy Foundation was launched in 1991 by three leading foundations who decided it was time for philanthropy to help the world meet its energy challenges. In 1999, with support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Energy Foundation established the China Sustainable Energy Program now called Energy Foundation China. They support work in the sectors of clean power, environmental management, industry, low-carbon development, sustainable cities, and transportation, as well as strategic communications.
The foundation evaluates grant requests primarily on their ability to: (1) deliver real commitments to energy efficiency and renewable energy in China; and (2) build capacity in organizations within China and thereby further sustainable energy policy progress.
2) Eligibility
Grants are provided to charitable organizations (commonly referred to as non-profit, non-governmental, or civil society organizations). This includes many Universities and research organizations. Eligible organizations include U.S. 501(c)(3) public charities as well as organizations in China and other countries outside of the U.S. whose projects are assessed and deemed to be charitable.
3) Location
They focus on China.
4) Budget
Grant size ranges up to $300,000. So far they have made over 400 grants under the China program. Their annual funding volume for China amounts to $30,000,000.
5) Application
Applications can be sent anytime throughout the year via email. To ensure that your project is eligible for funding, they invite you to submit a brief letter of inquiry to china(a)efchina.org describing the project, its purpose, and the amount you are requesting. After careful review, they will let you know if the project is a strong candidate for funding and if you should submit a full application.
