Description
1) Objective
Established in 1996, the Prize is given to an organisation, anywhere in the world, judged to have made extraordinary contributions toward alleviating human suffering. The Prize is not only intended to recognise and advance the efforts of the recipient organisation, but also to call attention to the worldwide need for humanitarian aid and to encourage others to seek opportunities to lend their support.A prize to honor the philanthropic dimension of Conrad Hilton’s life was suggested by Hilton Foundation Director James Galbraith. Support is given to these key areas: (1) children affected with HIV and AIDS; (2) foster youth; (3) disaster relief and recovery; (4) safe water; (5) health; (6) humanitarian aid and (7) education.
2) Eligibility
Nominees must be: (1) organisations, not individuals; (2) established, non-governmental, publicly supported charitable organisations. U.S. Internal Revenue Service tax-exempt status—or the equivalent for international organisations—will determine eligibility (international nominees will be contacted by the Foundation for appropriate documentation); (3) legally established for at least five years in order to be considered; and (5) in a position to provide audited financial statements and an operating budget (expenditures) greater than U.S. $750,000.
3) Location
The Hilton Foundation reviews hundreds of nominations of extraordinary nonprofits from across the globe.
4) Budget
The prize is awarded with $2,500,000.
5) Application
The nomination process is done entirely online. The nominee is contacted directly by the Foundation and asked to provide supporting materials. Multiple nominations are not encouraged, although more than one person can sign a nomination letter. If more than one nomination is received for an organisation, the first one received will be the nomination of record. All other nominations will be registered as letters of support; however, no more than three letters of support will be recorded. Once the nomination has been received, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation may require additional support material from the nominee. The Foundation will contact the nominee directly for this information. Nominations for the Hilton Humanitarian Prize are open year-round.
