Description
1) Objective
The U.S. Consulate General in Erbil of the U.S. Department of State has announced a grant opportunity to combat AI-generated disinformation. The program aims to build capacity among social media influencers, journalists, and journalism students in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region (IKR) and Kirkuk governorate. The rise of AI-generated disinformation poses significant threats to accurate and fair reporting, thereby endangering democratic processes.
This program will provide training to 15 social media influencers and 100 journalists or journalism students (with fewer than five years of service) on recognizing and countering AI-generated disinformation. The training will focus on understanding how AI is used to create disinformation, identifying disinformation, and effectively communicating these issues to the public without using scare tactics. Influencers will create at least two pieces of content on disinformation, while journalists and journalism students will publish at least two stories on the topic.
Eligible applicants include nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status with the IRS (excluding higher education institutions), nonprofits without 501(c)(3) status with the IRS (excluding higher education institutions), public and state-controlled institutions of higher education, and private institutions of higher education.
