Description
1) Objective
The Foundation for the Third Millennium promotes sustainability in all sectors of society. This means that it promotes action that places special emphasis on responsible behaviour in terms of environmental, economic and social activities. Therefore, the Foundation primarily supports projects that emphasis people help themselves, especially if these projects contain elements of education and training, with a high promise to become self-supporting. They fund projects which promote environmental protection and health, social justice and economic independence in balanced proportions.
All projects must be sustainable in that they combine ecological, social, and economic aspects and promote them simultaneously and in a balanced way:
- Long-term environmental: materials are used in closed cycles. Soil and water quality and availability are improved. Native biotopes increase, and biodiversity is promoted.
- Socially just: The target population is actively involved in the project. The goals are personal independence, self-determination, and individual responsibility. Human and civil rights are respected, and conflicts are resolved without violence.
- Economic independence: Economic conditions are improved by creating new or additional environmentally sustainable jobs and businesses. This requires local education, for example “training of trainers” or “from poacher to game preserver”, so that new cells using these models can be formed. The population becomes economically independent and has access to markets.
2) Eligibility
The Foundation preferably works with non-profit organisations that are based in Switzerland or neighbouring European countries (in order to assure an adequate partnership).
3) Location
They support activities worldwide (with a focus on the Global South).
4) Budget
There are no specifications for budgeting (however, no pure research costs, publication costs or general operating costs of the organisation are funded). At least half of the project’s budget must be contributed by third parties.
5) Application
Applicants first need to carry out a short online eligibility quiz. If positive, you can go ahead and submit your application anytime of the year. The Board convenes regularly, considering applications on a quarterly basis. Applicants are advised to submit their proposals at least four months prior to the intended project commencement date. Incomplete or excessively lengthy applications, as well as those lacking required supplementary documents, cannot be considered.
