Description

1) Objective

The Fund for Indigenous Populations was established pursuant to General Assembly resolution 40/131 of 13 December 1985, with the purpose of assisting representatives of indigenous communities and organizations to participate in the deliberations of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the former Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights by providing them with financial assistance, funded by means of voluntary contributions from Governments, non-governmental organizations and other private or public entities.

It provides grants to facilitate the participation of representatives of indigenous communities and organisations in sessions of the following United Nations bodies and mechanisms (normally in the form of travel grants).

2) Eligibility

Representatives of indigenous peoples’ organizations and communities are eligible to apply. According to General Assembly resolution 40/131, the only beneficiaries of assistance from the Fund shall be representatives of indigenous peoples’ organizations and communities: (1) who are so considered by the Board of Trustees; (2) who would not, in the opinion of the Board, be able to attend meetings without the assistance provided by the Fund; and (3) who would be able to contribute to a deeper knowledge on these mechanisms and bodies of the problems affecting indigenous peoples and who would secure a broad geographical representation.

3) Location

Representatives can come from anywhere in the world.

4) Budget

No upper and lower budget limits are specified.

5) Application

Applications can be submitted in various funding cycles during the year. Applicants need to state why they would like to attend the specific session and which contribution (ie presentation) they would make. The forms can be downloaded from their website.
