Description
1) Objective
The Global Innovation Fund’s main objective is to invest in social innovations that aim to improve the lives and opportunities of millions of people in the developing world. Through their grants and risk capital, they support breakthrough solutions to global development challenges from social enterprises, for-profit firms, non-profit organisations, international organisations, researchers, and government agencies. GIF invest in a range of innovations with strong potential for social impact at a large scale. It defines ‘innovation’ broadly to include new business models, policy practices, technologies, behavioral insights, or ways of delivering products and services that benefit the poor in developing countries — any solution that has potential to address an important development problem more effectively than existing approaches.
It covers the following sectors:
- Public health, nutrition and water
- Social protection
- Agriculture
- Energy
- Education
2) Eligibility
At GIF, they invest in a range of innovations from social enterprises, for-profit firms, non-profit organisations, international organisations, researchers, and government agencies with strong potential for social impact at a large scale.
3) Location
GIF is open to funding innovations in any developing country based on the World Bank’s list of low-income and lower-middle income countries.
4) Budget
They offer financing from $50,000 to $15,000,000, with the largest funding amounts reserved for innovations that can demonstrate evidence of success and that have potential to spread across multiple developing countries.
5) Application
GIF’s application process involves three steps: (1) the first step in applying to GIF required for all applicants is to submit an Initial Application, this includes a short online form and either a document (2-4 pages) OR a slide deck (8-12 slides e.g. in Powerpoint) and can be sent anytime; (2) after submitting an Initial Application, the most competitive applicants will be invited to provide additional information through the submission of a Full Application; this application requires a more detailed description of the applicant’s innovation and plan, team composition, and supporting research/evidence with quantitative estimates; and (3) once an application has been conditionally approved through GIF’s review process, GIF will negotiate a funding agreement with the applicant. There are no deadlines.
