Description

1) Objective

The Applied Materials Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Applied Materials company, which supports organisations that offer services without discrimination toward any group or individual. They provide financial support for projects that fall within one of the following programmatic focus areas:

  • Education: they have a special interest in funding Education grant proposals that:
    • Benefit students in grades K-12
    • Focus on traditional skills such as reading, writing, math, science and technology, and other subjects that prepare young people for college and career
    • Address critical education needs through innovative approaches to learning
    • Expand existing efforts in order to reach more students or a wider geographic area
    • Actively partner with other nonprofit groups to create, implement or evaluate shared programs
  • Arts and culture: they have a special interest in funding Arts and Culture grant proposals that:
    • Have broad community appeal
    • Take arts and culture outside traditional settings to reach young people of diverse backgrounds, particularly in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods
    • Support nonprofit organizations in bringing the arts to educational programs and organizations
  • Civic engagement: they have a special interest in funding Civic Engagement grant proposals that:
    • Meet basic needs such as access to nutritional food, clean water and affordable housing
    • Support systemic, collaborative approaches to eliminating homelessness
    • Stimulate innovations that improve efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery
    • Support the infrastructure of the nonprofit sector and its leadership
  • Environment: they have a special interest in funding Environment grant proposals that:
    • Focus on environmental education for young people, especially in underserved communities
    • Encourage hands on opportunities for employee volunteers and their families
  • Girls empowerment: they have a special interest in funding Girls Empowerment grant proposals that:
    • Address girls’ lack of self-efficacy and confidence
    • Positively change perceptions about traditional gender stereotypes
    • Increase access to high quality STEM programs
    • Suppport and/or strengthen the infrastructure of the field
    • Offer opportunities for employee engagement

2) Eligibility

Eligible for funding are national and local non-profit organisations based in one of the focus countries.

3) Location

They provide funding in all countries where Applied Materials operate. These include Europe, China, Taiwan, the United States, Japan, Israel, Korea, Singapore, and India.

4) Budget

They disburse annual grants at the amount of app. $9,000,000 (in the past most grants have ranged from $2,000-$1,000,000).

5) Application

Applications may be submitted through the Foundation’s online application portal on their website. Deadlines for applications are January 15th and June 15th every year and proposals are reviewed twice a year in their Board meetings. Applicants will receive a response from between March 15-31 or August 15-31, depending upon when the request is received. In general, projects that include opportunities for employee engagement and stimulate innovation are given priority.
