Description
1) Objective
The Christa Foundation was founded in 2007 in memory of Christa Strobel-Diethelm, a nurse and midwife who worked in Lesotho. The Foundation supports projects, which aim to improve the education and living conditions of orphans and half-orphans in Africa. They fund projects in the following areas: (1) children and youth (orphans and half-orphans, incl. children with disabilities); (2) education, incl. vocational training; and (3) health and medical services.
2) Eligibility
The Christa Foundation only grants contributions to Swiss based non-profit organisations or local organisations with Swiss connections which have been actively involved for several years in the development cooperation. Fundraising organisations are not supported.
3) Location
Eligible for funding are projects implemented in Africa, preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa. They have in the past funded projects in Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Chad, Kenya, Lesotho, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Niger, Namibia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Ghana, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
4) Budget
Individual project grants may range from €9,000 to €90,000 (CHF 10,000 to CHF 100,000) per year and average annual grant sizes are around €36,000 (CHF 40,000).
5) Application
The Foundation has no standardised application formats and proposals can be sent throughout the year (there are two Board meetings per year for funding decisions). Applications should include a section of the organisational background of the non-profit organisation, a project description (goals, expected results, activities, number of beneficiaries, an exit strategy), and a detailed and transparent budget and finance plan (incl. other donors and the organisation’s own financial contribution). Proposals may be written in German, English or French. There are no deadlines.
