Description
1) Objective
Founded in 2000 by former sports company owners John and Susan Dewan, the John and Susan Dewan Foundation has a grant-making program that aims to provide hope and a future to those in poverty. Besides its U.S.-based grant making program (focus on Chicago area), the Foundation also supports organisations that work overseas in developing countries, especially Central America, to provide education, job training and creation, community development and food/housing.
The John and Susan Dewan Foundation makes grants and gives assistance to organisations that provide direct service to people in poverty. Projects that transform lives and help the poor to help themselves are their primary focus. Faith-based organisations are a special interest for their grant making. They strongly favor making grants to smaller organisations rather than multi-million dollar institutions. The Foundation is interested in funding efforts with the potential to provide an improvement in service lasting beyond the period of support.
2) Eligibility
Grants are made only to public charities with tax-exempt status in the USA under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code.
3) Location
Outside the United States (focus area is Chicago), grants are made to projects in Central America and Caribbean.
4) Budget
Grants will generally be $2,500 or less and will usually be awarded for a single year.
5) Application
Applicant organisations should initially fill in the First-Time Funding Inquiry Form available on their website. Invitations to move forward or declinations will generally be made within 90 days of form submission.
