Description
1) Objective
Founded in 1977, the Mission of the Dorothea Haus Ross Foundation is to provide grants to non-profit organisations that seek to ensure basic needs and human rights including sustenance, education, healthcare and security to the most vulnerable children throughout the developing world and the United States. The Foundation focuses on supporting three populations with particularly critical needs and also programs that enable entrepreneurs to build sustainable economic communities for their children and families. The Foundation notes the overlap and diversity of these populations and do, on occasion, support organizations whose work may be in allied or supporting areas.
The primary focus is on: (1) trafficked and exploited children; (2) children with disabilities; (3) displaced children; (4) programs that enable entrepreneurs to build sustainable economic communities for their families and which provide the bedrock for child heath, safety and development. In addition, many of the programs supported by the Foundation focus on ensuring that children are safe and have access to education and care. They aim to promote the dignity of all children and facilitate the child’s active and full participation in their community.
2) Eligibility
The Ross Foundation provides financial assistance to organisations that are tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code. They do not fund non-US organisations or any organisation that does not have proof of current IRS tax-exempt status.
3) Location
They have no defined focus countries and funding tends to be spread to various developing countries in Asia (i.e., India, Thailand, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Nepal), Africa (i.e., Nigeria, Uganda, Liberia, Morocco), Europe (i.e. Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia) and Latin America (i.e., Guatemala, Haiti).
4) Budget
The Foundation has an annual grant volume of around $600,000 and fund an average of 15 projects per year (grant range is typically between $25,000 to $50,000, but it does occasionally make larger and smaller grants).
5) Application
The Foundation receives proposals by invitation only. However, potential applicants are encouraged to send a brief description of their organisation and a brief description of their project idea. If assessed positively, the Foundation will forward a detailed online Letter of Inquiry for the applicant to submit.
