Description
1) Objective
FOMA was established in 1969 to foster friendship, goodwill, and understanding between the UK and Malawi. The association, strictly non-political, focuses on maintaining connections with Malawi and among members who have lived and worked there. It seeks to help Malawians through small project grants aimed at social, educational, and healthcare projects, as well as other initiatives that can improve Malawian welfare or further the objectives of FOMA.
FOMA make grants to carefully selected small projects in Malawi where they believe our contribution can make a distinctive difference in ways that other bigger charities and organisations may not. Applications from charitable organisations, registered either in the UK or Malawi, are encouraged, particularly from those with connections to FOMA members. Projects should be community-based and ideally focus on the key target areas of health, education and agriculture or local infrastructure. Projects must promote self-help within the community and have a clear plan for future sustainability and development.
Project proposals may be one of two types:
1) an application for specific item(s) such as a one-off purchase of equipment financed by a single grant
2) an application for a specific project activity over a period of time such as construction or renovation of a building
2) Eligibility
Eligibility is limited to charitable and other organisations in Malawi for projects with the stated aims of improving education, healthcare, village infrastructure and welfare in communities in Malawi.
3) Location
Actions must take place in Malawi.
4) Budget
Grants are typically up to £1,000 per organization per year.
5) Application
There are two funding periods each year. A closed round in March for invited organizations only, and an open round in November for general applications from eligible organizations working in Malawi. The next deadline is 30 November 2023. All applications must use the official proforma available to download on their website (2 pages). Projects be assessed against the funding criteria by the Grants Committee and successful applicants notified by email.
