Description
1) Objective
The International Foundation funds grants in four key areas:
- Agriculture: They support projects working toward agricultural sustainability in developing countries that suffer from the impact of population growth and climate change, poor technology, and policy and management issues. These projects help smallholder farmers with crop management, storage, timely market information, mobile phone-based training services, savings and loan programs, and resource acquisition.
- Education: They support programs that extend the reach of national education systems to remote and undeserved areas. This includes remedial education, access to technology resources, teacher training, and extracurricular projects. We also support formal and informal education programs in information technology and vocational skills in both rural and city communities that prioritize women and girls.
- Environment: They support projects designed to address air and water pollution, climate change, soil degradation, exploitation of natural resources, biodiversity loss, deforestation, desertification, and ocean acidification. Our grants focus on projects that ensure water quality and access, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), and eliminating vector-borne diseases and exposure to toxic chemicals.
- Health: They support community primary health programs as well as maternal and child health care. We also support programs that provided general health education including hygiene, family planning, and birth control. Finally, we support programs that extend the reach of healthcare to remote regions and sectors of countries while also working to extend the reach of national health systems.
2) Eligibility
The Foundation funds US-based non-profit organizations who partner with poor communities in the developing world to improve their health, education and incomes, while strengthening local capacity to sustain their benefits. Grants are made to the sponsoring U.S. 501(c)3, which will be held responsible for the proposal, financial accountability, program results, and evaluation reporting.
3) Location
They fund programs in poor communities in developing countries, primarily in what is known as the Global South. This includes Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia (including West, Central and East Asia, as well as Oceania.) However, the foundation will not support grant activity in these regions where natural disaster, active conflict or chronic instability are present.
4) Budget
Grants range up to $50,000 and are made on a one-year basis. Their annual funding volume is app. $1,000,000. Applicants must provide a clear project budget identifying the project expenses—both overseas and home office. It should also identify all revenue sources for the project, showing that they balance project expenses. Applicants are encouraged to download the budget request model, complete and save it, then upload it when they apply online.
5) Application
Applications may be submitted twice a year (in January and July). It is done online. The first step is a Letter of Inquiry, if successful, a full proposal can be sent. Grants are reviewed by the Grants Committee and approved by the full Board– normally requiring at least 6 months from the time of receipt. The International Foundation fund only one proposal from an organization during each calendar year. Before another grant proposal can be funded, the foundation must receive a project evaluation including a financial report—due within 12 months of the grant receipt.
