Description
1) Objective
Matrix is a barristers’ chambers located in London and Geneva. With their core values being equality and fairness in all aspects of their work, in 2003 they have set up the Matrix Causes Fund. The Fund, to which members and staff make monthly contributions, commits grants to national and international charitable causes. The Fund has a sub-committee that considers applications for support.
The Fund provides support to organisations which promote (1) access to justice (particularly for people trying to get support to meet their basic personal needs), (2) equality of opportunity, or (3) a sustainable environment. A particular thematic focus for funding is supporting the needs of vulnerable persons such as prisoners, asylum seekers, people with mental health difficulties, people (particularly children) with disabilities, or women in refuges.
2) Eligibility
Eligible for funding are non-profit organisations (registered as a charity in the UK and abroad). The Matrix Causes Fund provides support to organisations which promote access to justice (particularly for people trying to get support to meet their basic personal needs), or promote equality of opportunity, or promote a sustainable environment.
3) Location
The Fund has no focus countries and provides grants across the world.
4) Budget
The Fund tends to only provide an organisation with one-off funds of up to £5,000, or funds of up to £3,000 a year for three years. Funds are only provided for identifiable items or activities (including costs associated with things like publications, staff/volunteer training, publicity, events and equipment) and general organisational expenditures are not covered.
5) Application
Interested organisations are requested to fill in the application form that can be downloaded from the Fund’s website. There are two funding cycles: Cycle 1 between 1 January and 31 March; and Cycle 2 between 1 July and 30 September.
