Description
1) Objective
Established in 1982, the New England Biolabs Foundation is a private foundation whose mission is to foster community-based conservation of landscapes and seascapes and the bio-cultural diversity found in these places. They believe that their natural and cultural values are inextricably linked, and that indigenous and local communities should play a fundamental role in their stewardship.
Preference is given to inquiries from community-based nonprofit organizations working toward: (1) conserving biological diversity (terrestrial and marine); (2) sustaining cultural diversity (linguistic diversity, as well as traditional knowledge systems and practices); (3) maintaining ecosystem services (water, soil, and carbon sequestration); (4) supporting food sovereignty and economic vitality of local communities; (5) in the marine environment, sustaining healthy reefs and fisheries.
2) Eligibility
The Foundation supports grassroots organisations and other NGOs in selected countries in Central America, Andean South America, and West Africa.
3) Location
The Foundation funds projects in the following regions and target landscapes: (1) coastal landscapes in Central America (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua), (2) Andean South America (Bolivia, and the Andes-Amazon Basin in Ecuador and Peru), and (3) West Africa (Cameroon and Ghana).
4) Budget
The maximum international grant size is $10,000, with grants typically ranging from $3,000 to $8,000. Local grants range from $2,500 to $5,000.
5) Application
The online application process entails two steps. The first step in the process is to submit a Letter of Inquiry (LoI), for which an online registration is required. If evaluated positively, applicants are invited to submit a full proposal (max. 10 pages). There are two trustee meetings a year where funding decisions are taken, typically in July and December. For the July meeting, LoI and proposals must normally be submitted by beginning/mid March and end of April, respectively. For the December meeting, LoI must normally be submitted by mid August and beginning of October, respectively.
