Description
1) Objective
The Papal Foundation began in 1988 as a response to the desire of Catholic clergy and laity in the U.S. for a unique, sustainable way to support the Holy Father and his witness in the world. They primarily work in the following thematic focus areas: (1) education and schooling (incl. infrastructure support, education technology); (2) health and medical services (incl. infrastructure support, supply and equipment); (3) churches and seminaries; and (4) humanitarian support (inc. economic empowerment, community development, social inclusion, refugee and migrant support, etc.).
2) Eligibility
The Foundation provides grants to Roman Catholic charities, religious and educational organisations serving people in developing nations around the world.
3) Location
They provide project funding across the globe. Most of their funded projects in the past are located in Sub-Saharan Africa.
4) Budget
Grant recipients are mostly faith-based/Catholic organisations. Their annual funding volume is around $2.5 million. Individual grant sizes may range from $20,000 to $100,000.
5) Application
The annual application deadline is 1 August. The application process is as follows: (1) applicants need to write a proposal (incl. name and location of the project, need assessment and budget); (2) organisations need to contact the local Bishop or the Superior of their religious congregation and submit the grant request to them (the Foundation does not accept requests directly); (3) with the support of the local Bishop or Superior, the proposal is then forwarded to the Apostolic Nuncio of the country in which the project is located; (4) with the support of the Apostolic Nuncio, the request is then sent to their Superiors for consideration; and (5) the Foundation’s Board of Trustees gives final approval of all grants.
