Description

1) Objective

The founding of Renovabis took the form of the collapse of communist systems and the Soviet hegemony in Central and Eastern Europe in 1993 by the German Episcopal Conference. This formation was in an effort to initiate and accompany partner groups to dialogue, exchange and the encounter between East and West. This mission is still today, in the midst of a new serious crisis of European integration and the threat to the international peace and justice. Although Renovabis is oriented on world-church principles of evangelisation and the Catholic social doctrine, it aims for Christians and all people of good will in Central and Eastern Europe to work for the renewal of their society, for reconciliation, justice and peace.

Thematic areas are:

  • Pastoral work: for example, pastoral tasks, pastoral care for young people, pastoral care for families, prison chaplaincy, training of priests, religious and catechists
  • Pastoral infrastructure: for example, construction and renovation of churches, parish centers, seminaries
  • Social tasks: for example, construction and equipment of orphanages, working with street children, promotion of facilities for the disabled and nursing homes, operation of social and hospice facilities, programs for the protection of life and family, holiday camps for needy children, aid projects for victims of trafficking in women
  • Promotion of structures of laity: for example, training courses for lay people, support of supra-diocesan networks, coordinators of youth and family work, promotion of church association work
  • School education and vocational training: for example, promotion of schools and vocational training centers in church sponsorship, training workshops, training grants, support of universities, study and language grants
  • Media work: for example, training of journalists, promotion of Christian media
  • Emergency aid: for example help for refugees, help in case of natural disasters

4) Budget

They have an annual funding volume of around €30,000,000 and fund 750+ projects per year (average grant size around €40,000).

5) Application

Since Renovabis works according to the “Partner Principle”, therefore applications can only be submitted directly from Central and Eastern Europe. However, mediation by partners in Western Europe is possible. In addition to the opinion of the local bishop, a project application must include a project description. Here, the project goal is presented and justified and explained how and in which period the goal is to be achieved. A financing plan must be presented which includes total costs, own contributions, contributions from other donors, risk assessment and the assistance requested by Renovabis. All application materials can be downloaded from their website and submitted all year round.
