Description

1) Objective

The Sumitomo Foundation’s purpose is to contribute to the betterment of human society. To that end the Foundation provides grants to projects for the protection, preservation and restoration of cultural properties outside and inside of Japan. They also provide grants for Japan-related research projects. This research program aims at enhancing the mutual understanding between Asian countries and Japan through promoting research projects in the field of the social sciences or humanities that are related to Japan.

The program is offered so that cultural properties outside Japan, the common heritage of human, be handed down to future generations. Eligible are: (1) Projects for the protection, preservation & restoration of cultural properties (i.e., fine arts or historical monuments) outside Japan, which are tangible, old and artistically or academically valuable, and ought to be handed down to future generations; (2) Preliminary surveys immediately linked up with the projects as mentioned in (1) above.

2) Eligibility

Applicant shall be the owner(s) or administrator(s) of the cultural properties or researcher(s), who will actually conduct preliminary surveys. The following are not eligible: (ⅰ) profit-making corporations, (ⅱ) individuals who own cultural properties for profit or whose cultural properties are for private use only.

3) Location

They are supporting projects worldwide outside Japan.

4) Budget

The grant budget is 35 million yen in total, with approx. 15 projects to be selected. Special Grant: 20 million yen to commemorate the Foundation’s 30th anniversary in addition to Grant for projects for the protection, preservation & restoration of cultural properties in Japan and above.

5) Application

The Application Form dully filled in and signed shall be submitted together with other necessary documents by registered mail. The application deadline is 30 November 2023.
