Description
1) Objective
Van Tienhoven Foundation is a small foundation that makes grants on the basis of the estate of Pieter Gerbrand van Tienhoven. They are concerned about life on earth and the delicate balance between human life, nature and biodiversity. The Foundation believes local people are instrumental and key to conserve and restore nature and species populations. They believe that small grants can have a great impact, but only if small grants lead to change in policy and practice.
Previously funded projects include: ecosystem restorations in national parks, piloting a community-based approach to ecosystems conservation, establishing biosecurity programs to protect the Critically Endangered Species, fostering human-Asian elephant coexistence with community involvement, supporting the operations of community rangers, creation of Wildlife Reserves, snow leopard conservation, community-based wildlife monitoring, climate-smart agriculture and environmental education in the tropical rainforests, etc.
2) Eligibility
Non-profit organisations, that are registered as legal bodies (NGOs and scientific institutions) are eligible to apply.
3) Location
For the 2025 application round, only countries on the DAC list from Asia and Latin America will be eligible.
4) Budget
The project time span is a maximum of two years, the maximum requested budget of €10,000 from the Van Tienhoven Foundation will be provided to successful applicants. If the Board considers applications of similar importance, requests for smaller amounts of money will be given priority. The total budget for one call is around €50,000. When projects request funds for equipment, they recommend to keep the costs limited and provide clear argumentation that ties the need for this equipment clearly to the action for change.
5) Application
The Van Tienhoven Foundation (co-)sponsors projects with a maximum of €10,000 through an annual call for proposals. The next call opens on 1 January 2025 and the last date for submission is 31 January 2025 (midnight, CET). Grantseekers start the application process by submitting a project proposal through the online application form. Then they are checked for eligibility and assessment criteria. The shortlisted applications will be contacted by the Board. Additional information is requested from each applicant at this stage. Applicants are requested to supply the names of two independent referees. The Board may at this stage also seek additional unremunerated referees to appraise applications.
