Description
1) Objective
The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) awards MD fellowships of up to 18 months to outstanding medical students to pursue ambitious, experimental projects in basic biomedical research worldwide. Fellowship holders must study human medicine in Germany and change cities and institutions for at least ten consecutive months to work in an internationally renowned laboratory.
MD fellowships enable students of human medicine to perform excellent basic research and thus build bridges between basic research and the clinic.
2) Eligibility
Eligible applicants are: junior researchers who are currently conducting an experimental project in basic biomedical research and wish to pursue a short-term research stay or attend a practical course of up to 3 months. They award travel grants to European citizens working in Europe and overseas, and to non-European citizens who perform their MD, PhD or postdoctoral project in Europe, or will use the travel grant to work in Europe.
3) Location
Actions can take place in various countries worldwide.
4) Budget
The amount of your monthly stipend depends on where you pursue your project. The total amount also includes a fixed monthly sum to cover minor project-related costs. Together, they come to e.g. €1,400 in Germany, €1,700 in the UK, and €2,100 in the USA. Depending on your personal situation, you may receive additional monthly benefits, e.g. a child care allowance of up to €500 and/or a spouse allowance of €200.
5) Application
Applications for MD fellowships from the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) must be in English and must be written by the applicants themselves. However, they strongly recommend that applicants discuss their draft proposals with their scientific supervisors. Applications must reach the BIF at least three months prior to the planned change of location and start in the host laboratory. Applications must be submitted online.
