Description
1) Objective
Set up in 1997, the NLnet Foundation aims to promote the exchange of electronic information and all that is related or beneficial to that purpose. They provide funding to organisations and people that contribute to an open information society. Apart from funding support, the Foundation also supports ideas with a global network of potential partners, projects, and expertise.
Mobifree is a pilot programme designed to push beyond the status quo of mobile software, and create a virtuous cycle of innovation through free and open source software, libre hardware and open standards. It has brought together a number of the “movers and shakers” of the open mobile ecosystem, in order to deliver a comprehensive development effort and advance a number of important free and open source technologies. The goal is to help mobile technology evolve to a more healthy state, provide people with concrete new tools and more reliable infrastructure, in order to provide better security and allow users more agency and choice.
2) Eligibility
Eligibility is open to all. You can apply as an individual, or as a formal or informal organisation of any type. Or even a collaboration of the two.
3) Location
Actions can take place worldwide but there is a focus on EU states.
4) Budget
They are seeking project proposals between €5,000 and €50,000 — with the possibility to scale them up if there is proven potential.
5) Application
The eighth call of NGI Mobifree opened up on June 1st 2025, with a deadline of August 1st 2025 12:00 CEST (noon).
