The Nippon Foundation’s mission is social innovation. Together with more than 20 partner organisations in Japan and worldwide the Foundation is funding and assisting community-led efforts aimed at realizing a more peaceful and prosperous global society.
They support: (1) welfare, anticrime, and disaster preparedness measures, as well as local education activities; (2) social safety nets, train hospice care staff, support populations in disaster-affected areas; (3) education and foster care systems, children’s hospice facilities, and student volunteers; (4) the oceans and keep the seas safe; (5) medicine, education, agriculture, and disabled persons in the developing world (they focus in particular on the battle against leprosy and work to ensure the human rights of those with the disease); and (6) international symposiums, cultural and personnel exchanges, projects to share Japan with the world, and activities to foster the global leaders of tomorrow.
2) Eligibility
Eligible are non-profit organisations around the world (incl. educational and research institutions).
3) Location
They support initiatives worldwide with a focus on Asia.
4) Budget
Grant amounts range from $30,000 to $1,000,000 but there is no upper limit. In the grants programme, they fund app. 30 projects per year.
5) Application
There is no application deadline as such, and applications can be received throughout the year. If your organisation is interested in receiving grants from them, you can contact them via email before applying. Before undertaking the considerable time investment necessary to put together an application, please note that the competition for grants is extremely fierce, and the chance of any application receiving funding is slim.
