Description
1) Objective
The Rufford Foundation is a UK based charity whose main remit is to offer grants for nature conservation projects in the developing world. Since inception they have given in excess of 6,300 grants in 155 countries. The Foundation has a broad scope of interest. As well as the conservation of animals in their habitat, it is also keen to support conservation work focusing on threatened habitats, and on other organisms such as plants, fungi, or insects. Beyond this, the overriding requirement is that the work must be of a pragmatic nature, and make a substantial and long lasting impact on the issue in question. There will often be a significant human element to a successful proposal, with community education and involvement being very important.
This Grants Program offers grants for nature conservation projects in the developing world. There exist four consecutive funding schemes: the Rufford Small Grant, the 2nd Rufford Small Grant, the Booster Grant, and Completion Grant.
2) Eligibility
Individuals and (small) organisations are eligible. The Completion Grant can only be given to organisations.
3) Location
They fund activities worldwide in Africa, Asia, Australasia, Central and Latin America, Europe, the Indian Sub-continent and Middle East. They have no focus countries.
4) Budget
A Rufford Small Grant is up to £7,000; a 2nd Rufford Small Grant is also up to £8,000; a Booster Grant is up to £12,000; and a Completion Grant is up to £18,000.
5) Application
Applications can be made at any time of the year and these are reviewed once all references have been received. The applications are assessed and decisions are usually made within 3 months, except for Completion Grants, where the process can take up to 6 months. All applications must be submitted using the online application process on the website.
