Description
1) Objective
The True Colors Trust is committed to supporting excellent local organisations and projects that work with disabled children and their families on a daily basis. This is done through the Trust’s small grants programme for projects that are implemented in Africa. All work supported by this program must adhere to the WHO definition of palliative care. Priority is given to the following, in no particular order:
- (1) training courses for palliative care service providers held in Africa (applicants must supply a curriculum/outline of the topics covered, and supply the name of the accrediting body. Funds will be released on receiving the letter of acceptance for the training institution);
- (2) equipment for patients (e.g. beds, wheelchairs). For equipment they will require at least three quotes attached to the application, with the preferred quote indicated and reasons why;
- (3) projects supporting paediatric palliative care services (this could include purchasing toys, integrating paediatric services into an existing programme, developing materials for advocacy, etc.);
- (4) medicines; (5) capital improvement costs (such as refurbishing buildings to improve the patient experience, buying furniture, etc.);
- (6) developing small palliative care projects (integrating palliative care components in existing health care services, adapting palliative care models, quality improvement activities e.g Palliative Care standards, developing materials, etc.) and helping health care providers to establish new palliative care projects where none currently exist; and
- (7) increasing access to palliative care in rural areas.
Currently, they also accept Covid-19 measures (i.e. prevention of and protection against Covid-19 for health workers, patients and their families).
2) Eligibility
The Trust only accepts applications from registered charities or those with charitable status and share the same priority area of supporting vulnerable disabled children.
3) Location
Grants will be awarded to organisations and individuals that will implement projects in Africa.
4) Budget
The size of grants ranges from £500-£5,000 for African organisations and projects. Grants in this category are usually one-off contributions rather than multi-year grants for on-going revenue costs.
5) Application
The Trustees welcome unsolicited applications for their small grants programmes. Trustees are keen to make these programmes available to as many organisations as possible; it is therefore unlikely that they will fund any organisation in consecutive years. All funding decisions are made by the Trustees of the True Colours Trust, who meet twice a year to review applications (usually March and September). Applications and approved grants are administered by the African Palliative Care Association. Application forms are downloadable from APCA’s website and completed applications should be sent directly to APCA at truecolourssmallgrants(a)africanpalliativecare.org.
