Description
1) Objective
Thailand hosts one of the largest reported stateless populations globally. Registered stateless persons are included in Thailand’s population database and have been issued unique identification numbers. They are predominantly made up of members of various ethnic minority groups living in highland areas, of which some are commonly referred to as ‘hill tribes’, descendants of former Thai nationals who had lost Thai Nationality as a result of border demarcation, nomadic and indigenous groups, and people whose ancestors had, generations ago, left neighbouring countries as a result of conflict and persecution.
In addition to the children born to registered stateless parents, other children in Thailand may be at risk of statelessness due to their difficulties in accessing birth registration, including abandoned children and foundlings. Stateless persons in Thailand have historically faced restrictions on freedom of movement, challenges in accessing essential services and, consequently, limited employment opportunities.
The expected result is to expedite the Nationality application process for stateless children and legalize unregistered stateless children (obtain 13 MOI digit) Target at least 5,000 children obtain 13 MOI digit over one year period.
