Description
1) Objective
The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds awards Travel Grants to junior researchers who are currently conducting an experimental project in basic biomedical research and wish to pursue a short-term research stay or attend a practical course of up to 3 months. The purpose is: (1) to learn clearly-defined methods useful for your ongoing research and the work of your research group at home by visiting another laboratory, or by attending research-orientated courses including practical training (the practical part has to cover at least  50% of the course); and (2) to enable graduates from abroad and their potential PhD supervisors to evaluate the scientific and personal prerequisites before embarking on a PhD thesis.
To this end, the graduate student shall pursue a short project in his/her potential PhD supervisor’s laboratory for at least 4 weeks. They can only support projects in the field of basic research aimed at elucidating basic biological phenomena of human life and acquiring new scientific knowledge. Every year, they award some 100 travel grants.
2) Eligibility
Eligible applicants are: junior researchers who are currently conducting an experimental project in basic biomedical research and wish to pursue a short-term research stay or attend a practical course of up to 3 months. They award travel grants to European citizens working in Europe and overseas, and to non-European citizens who perform their MD, PhD or postdoctoral project in Europe, or will use the travel grant to work in Europe.
3) Location
Actions can take place in various countries worldwide.
4) Budget
The awarded grant sum is based on the information provided in the application. Researchers can be awarded one travel grant during a period of 12 months. Registration fees for courses are included as well as 150 euros per month for living costs.
5) Application
The application for a travel grant of the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) consists of two parts: (1) an application form on our online portal and; (2) a PDF upload of the respective documents outlined below to be submitted via the online portal. The application must be written in English by the applicants themselves. Applications must be submitted to BIF the latest six weeks but no earlier than six months prior to the planned date of departure.
